Grey Whale Dies after Strange Behavior PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 17 August 2011 08:40

An adult female gray whale that lived in Northern California's Klamath River for 53 days died early Tuesday after beaching itself twice on a sandbar. This is another case of strange animal behavior which is happening more frequently for unknown reasons. In early mining days, settlers would take a small bird down into coal and gold mining expeditions as a precautionary measure. Animals are more sensitive to small environmental changes, thus the bird would flop over and die, giving the miners a warning the environment was unsafe.

Why is there not more studies being done and publicized as to the true cause of these occurrences?

At least a dozen leopard sharks have been found dead or dying within the past several days in bayfront lagoons in Redwood City, causing concern among local researchers for some kind of infection or toxic discharge in San Francisco Bay. The die off of leopard sharks is among many animal die offs which are the subject of much debate. One thing can be for sure in the scope of nature, either more attention is being given to the subject of animal die offs as a whole, or we have some very real problems. So far, leopard sharks of full grown size to that of younger less matured leopard sharks have been found washing up on shore and the number continues to grow. Pollution, disease, and numerous other theories have been laid out, but the information is still fresh and slowly becoming available.

"In the last decade, we've seen an increase in the animals trapped in culverts and pumps that used to be tidal canals or poisoned by periodic pollution events," said Sean Van Sommeran, executive director of the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, a Santa Cruz group that tracks sharks in Monterey and San Francisco bays. Beginning Monday, Van Sommeran received several phone calls from people who had seen leopard sharks stranded or dead in tide pools and sloughs just south of Foster City. Catherine Greer and her 13-year-old son, Lorenzo Fernandez, were among the first to observe the ailing sharks. Fernandez arrived Monday to go fishing at a lagoon near Seabrook Court on the east side of Redwood City and saw distressed sharks near the shore, some of them coming out of the water and seemingly gasping for air. For the next two days the pair returned to find more weakened and beached sharks - around a dozen in all, ranging from 12 inches to nearly 4 feet long. "They were resting their chins in the dirt on the shoreline, like they were trying to swim ashore," Greer said. Lorenzo "tried putting one back in the water, but it just came back and stranded itself."

The huge tsunami triggered by the 9.0 Tohoku Earthquake destroyed coastal towns near Sendai in Japan, washing such things as houses and cars into the ocean. Projections of where this debris might head have been made by Nikolai Maximenko and Jan Hafner at the International Pacific Research Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa. Maximenko has developed a model based on the behavior of drifting buoys deployed over years in the ocean for scientific purposes.

Multi-national corporate interests have had us believe for some time now that Bottled water is in some way shape or form better for us than tap water.  Most of this marketing strategy has involved an attempt at slandering the reputation of tap water, making us think that tap water is "less safe" or even "unsafe".
