Well, if you have missed the sensationalized headline a few weeks back from NASA titled, "RIP California", stating that California only has 1 year of water left, you must have been living under a rock in one of the dry reservoir beds in California.  The truth is that there is a severe drought, but droughts come and go, this is the simple nature of a drought.  If the rainfall was not cyclical, then the area would simply be defined as a desert.

Court green-lights Shell Oil's drilling in Alaska Arctic PDF Print E-mail

Arctic Oil Drilling

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected challenges by Alaska Native groups to Shell's exploration plan in the Beaufort Sea and also denied petitions challenging its plan for the Chukchi Sea, reported Democracy Now.

Shell plans to send drill ships north this summer. The company has already spent over $4 billion into buying undersea leases and preparation for work in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. Shell investment is under the conviction that up to 27 billion barrels of oil – three times as much as has been taken from the Gulf of Mexico in the last two decades – lies off northern Alaska, and argues that Arctic oil drilling can be done safely, will cut foreign dependence and create thousands of jobs.

Alaska Native groups had opposed the effort, saying the federal government had failed to properly consider the risks.

Environmental groups– national environmental groups and some Eskimo ones – argue that drilling is premature in the pristine Arctic, that it is impossible to clean spilled oil in ice, that a blowout could destroy a 4,000 year old Inupiat culture and damage thousands of whales, seals and walrus.

Just moments ago activists took a stand at a coal-fired power plant in North Carolina.

The protesters have strapped themselves to equipment and a coal loader and coal conveyors, while some are scaling the plant's 400-foot smoke stack so they can hang up a banner that proclaims: "Stop destroying mountains." Others are displaying banners at the plant's coal ash ponds where the ash is stored.
Sixteen protesters have been deployed in this action and five have been arrested, MacDuff said. The organization expects all to be arrested when they are forcibly removed or when they voluntarily come down, she said.

Duke Energy is looking to acquire the company that owns the plant, Progress Energy. If the deal goes down, Duke will not only be the largest utility in the country but also one of the dirtiest.

#OccupyDuke Take Action

That’s because both companies rely on destructive practices like mountaintop removal for getting their coal and neither is making very much progress toward renewable energy.
